If natural fuels such as coal and petroleum are exploited to such an extent as they are nowadays, they will run low in the next century. Nuclear plants considered some time ago as a good alternative are rather risky as the disaster in Chernobyl in 1986, in the Ukraine proved it. That is why we should look for other sources of energy such as wind, tidal waves, sun or the combustion of biomass. Nowadays these renewable sources of energy provide us with good supplies. One of the most economical ways of producing energy is by using solar energy. The amount of solar energy that reaches the Earth within 40 minutes would cover our yearly demand. The shining sun generates energy in the reaction of changing hydrogen into helium. Thanks to solar energy our houses could be heated by the Sun. Solar batteries have already been used, for example, in Florida, in the USA where public phones are powered by them. Another source of energy worth mentioning is the wind energy. Wind power stations produce no pollution. They are ecologically safe but they need a large number of turbines to produce adequate power. That is why they are accused of spoiling the view. Windmills have been built in such countries as Holland or Belgium. Such machines are very beneficial but first and foremost they are not dangerous to the environment. Hydroelectric power stations are also worth mentioning. They are built in mountainous areas where rivers flow very fast. In Norway 80% of energy is produced by hydroelectric power stations. Energy from the combustion of biomass is used to heat houses and small workshops. If the biomass were not burned, the same amount of carbon dioxide would be emitted as a result of bacterial decomposition of wood. In conclusion I would like to say that it seems necessary to search for new sources of energy. And even though alternative energy production needs large amounts of money and not every country can afford it, we should find money to build windmills or dams and reservoirs if we want our children to grow up in a clean environment.
