Over 20 linocuts printed in large format are on display at an exhibition of work by Teresa Jakubowska, one of Poland's greatest graphic artists. Jakubowska donated the works to the National Museum in Wrocław. Jakubowska, 80, is a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. In 1963, she represented Poland at the Biennale of Young Artists in Paris. She has for years been faithful to letterpress printing, especially large-format linocuts which she usually prints on special Japanese paper. Jakubowska's work is often encoded in graphic symbols. In Corrida from 1963, Jakubowska portrayed a black bull with three pikes sticking out of its neck. The animal's sad gaze is pointed towards a bloodthirsty mob with faces twisted by derision. The caricatured images of the witnesses are juxtaposed with the pain of the animal slaughtered for the delight of the crowd. The exhibition also features a work entitled A Place Atop which depicts the rat race. It shows a structure with a platform on top which people are struggling to climb. Those who make it are still fighting for the highest place on the platform. The struggle to rise above the gray crowd is the subject of a linocut entitled Constraining from 1971. In the picture, Jakubowska shows a winged creature wriggling its way up into the air but pulled down by sneering, laughing and grotesquely shaped human characters. M.H.
