A two-day informal meeting of the European Union 's 27 interior ministers started in the Baltic city of Sopot, northern Poland, on July 18 to discuss the future of the border-free Schengen zone following Denmark's decision to strengthen its customs controls.
'The ability to travel freely in the whole Schengen area is regarded precious not only by Poles, Poland's Minister of Internal Affairs Jerzy Miller said.
The debates are also aimed at bringing EU countries closer to a compromise on migration issues. The ministers meeting in Sopot set to discuss the reinforcement of the external borders of the EU through intelligent borders, the measures needed to be taken to speed up talks on the establishment of a Common European Asylum System in response to an influx of immigrants from North Africa.
Such a policy is to lead to a situation where each person seeking asylum or a refugee status in any EU country will be equally treated in every EU member state, Miller said.
Agenda of the Sopot debate includes also synthetic drugs, the so-called smart borders and two computer systems suggested by the EC - the system of registration of persons crossing the EU external borders and the so-called travel registration system.
