Hello, I’m Dr. Neal Schultz
[pause]
and welcome to DermTV.
Today, I’m going to give you six really
important tips for how to help
prevent acne breakouts in adults. First and
perhaps most important, make
sure that all of your skin care products,
whether it’s makeup, moisturizer,
sunscreen or anything else, is labeled either
“water-based” or “oil-free”
or “non-comedogenic.” Second, try to avoid
eating, on a consistent basis,
foods with a high iodine content. Iodine is
the only food substance that
has been proven, on a cumulative basis, to
actually promote acne breakouts,
and the foods that are high in iodine are
foods like shellfish, lobster,
shrimp, crabmeat and also certain green vegetables
like spinach, seaweed
and kelp. Try to avoid repeatedly sleeping
with your makeup on. Look, it’s
not the end of the world if you sleep with
your makeup one or two nights
but, if you’re doing it repeatedly, it’s
going to be ground into the pores,
and that’s going to help promote clogging
of your pores and acne breakouts.
As a matter of fact, don’t let anything
consistently touch or rub your
face, whether it’s your fingers, a hair
band, or even your hair, even if
your hair is squeaky clean. Anything that
consistently touches your facial
skin promotes thickening of the skin and thickening
of the skin promotes
acne breakouts. When you wash your face, after
you’re done washing, pat
your face dry, don’t rub it dry. Even just
rubbing can thicken the skin.
And make sure, when you’re exercising, that
you wash your face before you
exercise because, if you don’t, the oil
and debris that you have
accumulated during the day will just be ground
into your skin when you wipe
away
your sweat.
