The largest display of contemporary art in Poland and one of the largest in Europe is on show in Poznań, featuring work by almost 150 artists from 30 countries. The essence of the exhibitions, entitled Mediations Biennial, lies in the juxtaposition of opposites: art and technology, European and Asian culture, famous artists and beginners. The curators of the main exhibition come from different cultures: Tsutomu Mizusawa is a curator from Japan and Ryszard W. Kluszczyński is a professor at a Polish academy of fine arts. Each of them selected artists for the project independently, the result being Beyond Mediations, one of the biennial's main exhibitions. It juxtaposes works of traditional art such as paintings, sculptures and drawings with new media. Placing paintings and interactive installations next to each other, the exhibition presents the diversity of contemporary art, even though it may seem to be ruled by chaos. But, as Kluszczyński writes in the introduction to the exhibition catalogue, "The world is chaos when it is freed of the corset of order-defining ideologies. Today only art can restore the possibility and joy of experiencing the world in its lack of order…" Erased Walls is the biennial's other main exhibition. Its theme is the obliteration of borders, such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, in the contemporary world. Old, now nonexistent borders, however, are replaced by new ones that appear unexpectedly. These are "invisible walls, and therefore more painful," says Tomasz Wendland, one of the curators of this part of the biennial. The exhibitions are accompanied by performance art at different venues. The exhibitions are on display through Oct. 30 at the Zamek Cultural Center (80/82 Święty Marcin St.), the National Museum (9 Marcinkowskiego Ave.), Poznań's Old Town Square, the Arsenal Municipal Gallery and on Orzeszkowej Street.
