The latest works by contemporary painter Agnieszka Szyfter were shown Sept. 28 at the Hilton Hotel in Warsaw. The paintings depicted famous women and pop icons portrayed as someone else, including Messalina with the face of actress Angelina Jolie and America's First Lady Michelle Obama as Nefertiti. Szyfter unveiled a collection of paintings entitled Women Who Shaped the World. "I decided to identify those few historical and mythical figures who were ahead of their time," Szyfter said about similarities between real-life and fictional women and icons of contemporary culture. "Some of them gave in to love and met a tragic end, others were happy and loved, and there were also those who sacrificed themselves for the sake of their countries, but life was rather hard on them." Szyfter depicted Elizabeth I as Marylin Monroe, while the face of Carla Bruni was attached to a painting entitled Mary Magdalene. Angelina Jolie gazed at visitors from three of Szyfter's paintings, A Woman with a Pearl, Carmen and Messalina. "This is about the resemblance that I saw between contemporary icons and the characters in the paintings," Szyfter said. "Joan of Arc fought for her country just like Madonna has fought her way to the top on the music market." Using oils and acrylics, Szyfter created a series of paintings dedicated to struggling and passionate women. All the pictures are for sale at prices of up to almost zl.20,000. Szyfter lives and works in Warsaw. Her pictures have been shown at galleries in Poland, the United States, Europe and Asia. Tomir Mazur Source: The Warsaw Voice
