June 13, 2011 Relations between Europe and the USA, Eastern Partnership, the place of Central Europe in the global economy, the future of Belarus and the revolution in North Africa were the main topics of the second annual Wroclaw Global Forum (WGF), held from 9-11 June 2011 in the south-western city Wroclaw. Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski and many other prominent politicians, decision-makers, business leaders and diplomats from the United States and Europe, including American Senator John McCain, met at the two-day event. "WGF has been assigned a very ambitious task: always be up to date and discuss matters crucial for the world and transatlantic relations, here and now, the mayor of Wroclaw Rafał Dutkiewicz said. During the conference, Freedom Awards were presented to individuals who have contributed to extending freedom and civil liberties. The recipients included opposition activists from Belarus: Ales Byalyatski, Natalya Kaliada, Zhanna Litvina as well as Esraa Abdel Fattah - blogger and one of the founders of the Egyptian April 6 Youth Movement. The awards were also presented to the Polish Foreign Affairs Minister Radosław Sikorski and the Moldovan Premier Vladimir Filat for their efforts to promote democracy in the world and for promoting the trans-Atlantic values - freedom of speech and human rights; and to the founders of the daily "Gazeta Wyborcza" - Helena Łuczywo and Adam Michnik. "The Freedom Awards remind us of our responsibility to support the spirit of democracy wherever it arises. This year, we will recognize the powerful legacy of Solidarity, the steady progress of Moldova, and the incredible awakening in North Africa. And we will not forget the brave people of Belarus and their struggle for freedom." Frederick Kempe, president and CEO of the Atlantic Council, a co-organizer of the WGF. Source: The Warsaw Voice
